Emilia sleeps next to me, exhausted from all our fun in the shower and bed. I should be tired too, but I’m just awake, watching her. I brush her hair away from her face and she moves closer.

For someone so unwilling to cuddle or kiss once the sex starts, she’s all about being right against me when she sleeps. She holds onto my arm like it’s a teddy bear and sighs. There’s nothing vicious about her asleep. Maybe it’s because she knows I check her pillow to make sure she hasn’t stuffed a knife there, or maybe it’s because it’s the only time she relaxes.

I run my fingers through her hair again, urging her closer even though I shouldn’t. I shouldn’t even be sleeping in here. I’m compromising this case, compromising Emilia, putting my job on the line, and ... Sylvie.

Jeeze, if I get close to Emilia, if I let this keep going, what’s going to happen to my daughter when Emilia leaves?

Emilia stirs and turns my chin to face her. “I can’t sleep with you staring at me like that.”

“You were sleeping just fine,” I argue.

She rolls her eyes and pushes herself up. “What’s on your mind, detective? Rethinking the plan for the mall tomorrow? Extra security following us?”

“No. It’s not that,” I grumble.

Emilia looks at me for a moment longer, then pulls her knees to her chest. She looks at me from behind her hair and smiles. “Actually, thinking about what we’re doing?”

“Don’t start-”

“It’s easier not to think, but if you focus too much on not thinking, it defeats the purpose. Then you end up staying up late after decent sex in the shower thinking about what it all means,” she says with a grin.

“Decent?” I scoff. “If I wouldn’t have pushed my fingers into your mouth-”

“Fine, more than decent. But you’re still thinking about the meaning when we agree it means nothing.”

“You’re holding onto that after having sex multiple times in two days and the conversation we had an hour ago?” I ask. “You’re willing to sacrifice your own well-being to protect my daughter, to further my case, and that’s supposed to mean nothing at all?”

She sighs and shakes her head. “Yeah, Sylvie deserves to be safe, but so does my brother.”

“Which one?”

“The good one,” she grumbles. “Luca’s always been gentle. He could do something good. He’s not ...” She takes a breath, then clears her throat. “Anyway, I’m still related to them and I don’t want them dead.”

“I can understand that.”

“No one wants their family dead. Not even me. Okay? Life would be easy if they weren’t around sometimes, but it’s more that I wish they didn’t exist, not that they’d die.” She rubs the back of her neck. “It’s complicated.”

“So, if we catch them all and you get free, what are you going to do?” I ask.

She considers it while nibbling her lip. “I don’t know. I’ve only ever wanted to move up in the family business. What’s better than having a ton of money,
